If Apple ever opens up the ability for third-party developers to change the startup disk again and Windows is still a bootable OS on Mac hardware, I will look into bringing this project back.īootChamp has been the most successful open source software I’ve developed based on the number of monthly downloads. Update 2 (Nov 27, 2015): I am officially shutting down BootChamp. If you are disappointed with Apple about this, I would suggest reporting your concerns to them.
Unless anything changes, BootChamp will be EOL’d. It also doesn’t appear that Apple will create exceptions or workarounds, as that would defeat the purpose of the security layer. Apple’s documentation explicitly states that the bless tool can no longer be used due to SIP, so no update to BootChamp will be able to work around this issue. Update 1 (Oct 4, 2015): 10.11 was released a few days ago, and 10.11.1 beta is circulating. I will post updates when I find anything more. If it’s a feature, they need to update their bless tool and remove the featureset entirely.
If it’s a bug, then that means Apple should be fixing it in a future point release, for example 10.11.1. Whether it’s a bug or a feature is impossible to tell at this point. I believe this is from changes related to the new “rootless” or System Integrity Protection feature of El Capitan ( more info). When clicking “Restart into Windows” a “Bless failed” error will show with “Could not set boot device property”.Īdditionally when looking at Console (in /Applications/Utilities) a message from sandboxd stating “deny nvram-set efi-boot-next” will appear. Since El Capitan beta 7 BootChamp no longer is functioning.
